West Tampa

West Tampa grew from industrial sites and home lots that lawyer Hugh Macfarlane platted across the Hillsborough River, and its first cigar factory opened in 1892. The Florida Legislature created the City of West Tampa on May 18, 1895, and by 1900 it had a larger population than Tallahassee. Its two center streets, Howard and Frances (now Albany), were named for Macfarlane's son and wife.
